Salary: £42,893–58,977

Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) owns vessels and harbour infrastructure necessary for vital ferry services serving many communities throughout Scotland. We have big ambitions to transform the ferry network in Scotland. Backed by a five-year investment plan from the Scottish Government, our plans to upgrade and improve ferries and harbours are already well underway.

We are recruiting for the Buildings and Property Technical Manager position to strengthen the Harbour Assets Team. This position offers an exciting opportunity to act in a client role, assisting with the maintenance and improvement of our buildings and property portfolio, including travel across Scotland and the Western Isles.

The role

Working with the Buildings and Property Manager, you will design, plan, and deliver new construction, refurbishment, and minor maintenance projects for our terminal buildings. You will also develop and deliver sustainable projects in line with CMAL’s corporate objectives through new construction and retrofitting of existing buildings. The role involves:

  • Working with the Buildings and Property Manager to plan and prioritise building projects in line with our Asset Management and Corporate plan, including new construction, refurbishment and demolition.
  • Working with the CMAL engineering team to deliver buildings within larger port redevelopment projects.
  • Design, manage and deliver CMAL’s plan to construct new buildings and refurbish existing properties.
  • Working with our harbour operator and the communities which we serve to identify, prioritise and deliver building improvements in operational environments.
  • Championing and delivering sustainable buildings through design and appropriate systems.

Who are we looking for?

CMAL requires a motivated, professional, and diligent individual with a proactive and creative approach and the ability to work autonomously and flexibly. We are particularly looking for people with the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • A Chartered/Building Surveyor (BSc, MRICS or AssocRICS), Construction degree (BSc/BEng/MEng), Architectural Technician or other relevant qualification (e.g. HND) with at least five years of active experience.
  • Experience in managing construction projects, including new construction, refurbishment and demolition,
  • Experience in contract management, CDM and H&S
  • Experience and understanding of sustainable construction and alternative energy sources.
  • Able to communicate effectively, consult and negotiate with people from varied disciplines.
  • Possess good report writing skills.
  • The ability to solve complex problems.

What’s in it for you?

A rewarding and engaging work environment, looking after lifeline assets in some of Scotland’s most beautiful locations.

  • A competitive salary (Grade 7—placing on the scale is dependent on qualifications and experience).
  • A benefits package, including 30 days annual leave plus eight days public holidays per year.
  • A defined benefit pension scheme, life assurance and an optional healthcare scheme.
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Free Ferry travel
  • We also support further personal and professional development.

The work environment

Our head office is on the Clyde Estuary in Port Glasgow, and our port infrastructure is spread across the west coast and the islands of Scotland. Like most organisations, we’ve learnt a thing or two about flexible, remote working, and we are actively building on this to ensure we have the best people working with us to serve the communities that rely on our infrastructure.

The primary responsibilities of the role will be undertaken during office hours of Monday to Friday, 08:30–17:00 at our Port Glasgow head office, but the ability to work flexible hours, travelling and staying overnight on the CMAL network and elsewhere is also required.
