The Lochmaddy Pier Upgrade project has won the prestigious Marine Award at the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards 2024.

CMAL supported Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar as the client for this project, and received a special mention on the award certificate. The project was judged by a panel of leading industry experts before coming out on top.

The Scottish Civil Engineering Awards ceremony took place on Friday, 23rd August, at the Ghillie Dhu in Edinburgh and celebrated the remarkable achievements in civil engineering across Scotland.

This award highlights CMAL’s commitment to providing, safeguarding and developing ferries and harbours across Scotland. We extend our congratulations to everyone who contributed to the success of the Lochmaddy Pier Upgrade project, including Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, George Leslie Ltd, and Wallace Stone.

Upgrades delivered as part of this project

Pier improvements

Extensive pier improvement works were completed in November 2023 to enable the terminal to accommodate larger vessels in future, including:

30m long caisson

New parallel motion fenders along the main southern pier berth

Replacement fenders to secondary north berth

Repair and strengthening of existing inner pier section

Repairs to the existing middle pier section

Dredging of the area in front of the pier

Marshalling area

Major extension works to the marshalling area were completed in November 2023 to enable the facility to accommodate increased vehicle numbers in the future, including:

Reclamation of land to the west of the existing marshalling area

100% increase in the total length of marshalling lanes available

New concrete hardstanding area with dedicated parking for seven HGV trailers

New surfacing across the whole marshalling area

New roundabout at the terminal entrance to improve safe traffic flow
