CMAL Appoints Contractor to Maintain Aids to Navigation System
Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has awarded a contract to Gareloch Support Services (GSS) Ltd to maintain CMAL’s Aid to Navigation systems.
The contract includes the inspection, servicing, repair and supply of CMAL’s Aid to Navigation systems for the next five years, with the option to extend for another three years. CMAL’s Aids to Navigation systems include lighthouses, fixed lights and buoys that aid a vessel when navigating into a port or harbour.
GSS will work closely with CMAL’s Harbour Master, David McHardie and the harbour operator, CalMac Ferries Ltd, to maintain the systems.
David McHardie, Harbour Master at CMAL said:
“We are delighted to appoint Gareloch Support Services to maintain our navigational aids and moorings. Gareloch Support Services have the experience required and knowledge of providing these services in the West coast of Scotland and the Clyde Estuary.”
CMAL awarded the contract in compliance with the International Association of Marine Aids (IALA) Guideline No. 1077, which requires marine services to maintain systems and provide public and roll on and roll off ferry moorings and tidal staff gauge boards to sustain a reliable service and provide information to mariners.

- Under the UK Government’s Port Marine Safety Code Aids to Navigation systems must be maintained by Harbour Authorities and any other existing Local Lighthouse Authorities (LLA) must be maintained in accordance with the availability criteria laid down by the General Lighthouse Authorities (GLA).
