CMAL has won the Electric and Hybrid Propulsion System of the Year award for a second time, for MV Catriona at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards 2016 in Amsterdam.

The ceremony, hosted at the 2016 Electric and Hybrid Marine World Expo, which is the international exhibition of electric and hybrid marine propulsion systems, technologies and components, honours the world’s finest engineers, innovations and products in the electric and hybrid marine arena.

CMAL was awarded Electric and Hybrid Propulsion System of the Year for MV Catriona, a roll on roll off vehicle and passenger diesel electric hybrid ferry that is starting sea trials in July 2016. It is a £12.3 million investment from the Scottish Government and is capable of reducing fuel consumption by up to 38% compared to a conventionally powered vessel of the same size.

Commenting on winning the award, Kevin Hobbs, Chief Executive of CMAL said:

“We are absolutely delighted to receive such a prestigious award among so many other deserving projects.  We are committed to leading the way in innovative ferry design and building for the future and it is very rewarding to have this work recognised by our peers throughout the world.”

The judging panel include 22 of the world’s leading marine journalists, industry experts and academics.

CMAL has three hybrid ferries, MV Hallaig launched on 17th December 2012, MV Lochinvar launched 23rd May 2013 and MV Catriona launched 11th December 2015. This is the second time CMAL has won the Electric and Hybrid Propulsion System of the year with MV Hallaig awarded in 2014.

All three ferries are designed for use on short crossing routes and use innovative green technology. The ferries use a low carbon hybrid system that combines traditional diesel power with electric battery energy. Each ferry accommodates 150 passengers, 23 cars or 2 HGV’S, with a service speed of nine knots and is powered by small diesel generator sets, feeding power to a 400 volt switchboard, which, supplies power to electric propulsion motors that turn the propulsion units.
