Gasay Ferry Terminal Development
In 2017, the Lochboisdale Harbour Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidance (STAG) report was published, and it concluded that parts of the existing ferry terminal had reached the end of their serviceable life. CMAL is leading the project to build a new ferry terminal for Lochboisdale.

Outline Business Case Progress Update
27 May 2024
Following public engagement in September 2023, a final draft Outline Business Case (OBC) report was prepared.
In accordance with procedure, an independent Scottish Government Gateway Review was then undertaken on the OBC in November 2023. Several recommendations for improvement were made by the review. An Action Plan was developed by CMAL to address the recommendations. A subsequent review of the Action Plan by the Gateway Reviewer (in March 2024) concluded that further work needs to be done on the OBC to strengthen the strategic mandate for the project and to better define Do-Minimum options for consideration alongside the preferred option (presented at the public engagement in September 23).
Extensive additional technical and economic studies are now underway and these will lead to a revision of the OBC report addressing all the concerns and recommendations of the Government Gateway Review.
It is expected that a revised OBC report will be produced by late Autumn 2024. This report will then undergo a further Scottish Government Gateway Review and will subsequently be presented to the CMAL board and the Transport Scotland Investment Decision Making board for funding. The seeking of funding approval is programmed for early 2025. Assuming that funding is approved for the project to proceed, the revised expected date for commencement of operations from a new Lochboisdale ferry terminal is now spring 2029.

In-person Public Engagement Event
5 September 2023
CMAL is urging the local community in Lochboisdale to share their views on the preferred option that has been identified after assessment for the ferry terminal at Gasay on South Uist.
Various options have been evaluated based on set requirements and criteria, and the preferred option is to build a solid wall pier at the South of Gasay Island. The current pier is based at nearby Lochboisdale.
CMAL is leading the delivery of the project and following community engagement in June 2022 is now seeking further community feedback from the public and stakeholders.
An in-person engagement event will be taking place on Tuesday 12th September 2023 between 16:30 and 19:00—
Southend Community Hall
Daliburgh
Isle of South Uist
HS8 5SS
Members of the project team will be on hand to answer any questions and share more details about the port project and the preferred option.
In attendance will also be CMAL’s vessel team, who will outline the route ahead for the new vessel design, which is intended to replace the existing vessel MV Lord of the Isles.
An online consultation survey will also be available on this project webpage soon. The survey will be open from Tuesday 12th September, until Tuesday 26th September 2023.
A paper version of the Gasay survey can be requested by emailing gasay.project@cmassets.co.uk, by phoning 01475 749 920 or writing to—

Q&A and consultation report from public meeting
14 November 2022
A Q&A document and consultation report have been published following a public meeting in June 2022.
Thank you to everyone who attended the community engagement sessions to share your views on the proposed Gasay Ferry Terminal, which generated a great deal of discussion and ideas.
The project aims to:
- provide a new ferry terminal to replace the ageing infrastructure at Lochboisdale
- provide a terminal that potentially reduces the number of weather or sea state related cancellations at Lochboisdale
- provide a terminal to meet modern standards for infrastructure and landside facilities.
A summary of all the questions raised across all sessions has been developed and can be found here:
These FAQs will be updated. Please continue to visit this page for more information as the project progresses.
All consultation survey feedback was analysed and developed into a consultation report, which can be found here:
These findings will also be discussed and used to inform the project.
There will be another engagement period later in 2022.
If you would like to get in contact with the project team, please email gasay.project@cmassets.co.uk or call on 01475 749 920.
